Many people think that if you put forth too much effort into analyzing a film then you lose your ablility to simply enjoy the film itself. But as the Corrigan text and my experience tell me, this is an incorrect assumption. Corrigan discusses that opinion and evaluation contribute to writing and thinking about a film. This is true because as you look deeper into the underlying meanings and messages of a film, you get a deeper appreciation for what is being portrayed on screen rather than just for visual entertainment. You also are able to make a relationship between the theme of the film and our culture, which can lead you to further understanding of the film. The movie that serves as the best example for me is Crash. Crash is such a moving film even for someone who does not evaluate or form an opinion of it. But when you are able to look deeper into the underlying meanings, you are able to appreciate the film more and you are also able to critically write about it as well.
